Stalbridge, a market town and parish in the Sturminster division and Browneshall hundred, on a branch of the river Stour, 7 miles from Sherborne, 10 from Shaftesbury, and 1 from Henstridge. Contained in 1831, 1773 inhabitants, and was assessed in 1815 to £10,615. The town consists of two streets angularly situated towards each other, and at the point of junction is an ancient sculptured cross, about 30 feet high, of excellent workmanship and just proportion, which are rarely found in similar structures. The soil is rocky, and supplies the neighbourhood with stone for building. The silk manufacture is the only one existing here at present, though the place was formerly noted for its manufacture of hosiery. The market-day is on Tuesday, and the fairs for cattle are held on 6th May and 4th September. The living is a rectory, in the patronage of Christ's College, Cambridge, value £27 4s 7d. K. B. and £1,004 in 1835. There is also, a place of worship for disenters.
Marnhull is a village and parish in the same hundred, divided from Stalbridge by the river Stour. The occupation of its inhabitants is chiefly agriculture.
